Getting Cheaper Car Insurance as a Senior Driver

For those who are considered seniors in society, there are luckily a few measures in place that can help them get cheaper car insurance. This is important because many insurance companies consider senior drivers to be high risk, as data shows that seniors are involved in more crashes than other drivers. Anything that deems someone as a high-risk driver will put them in a place where their insurance rates are more costly than others.

Here are some ways that seniors can obtain better insurance rates:

  1. Get a low mileage discount. For those who drive less miles than the average driver (usually seniors, especially those who are retired, fall into this category), many insurance companies will offer discounted rate benefits. That’s because insurance companies see this as a way to reduce risky driving behavior.
  2. Take a defensive driving course. You can attend these courses either online or in-person, which will teach you about updated traffic laws and other safety precautions. Once you’ve taken a course, you just need to send your certificate for proof to your insurance company, and they will often lower your rates.
  3. Purchase a car that only needs cheap insurance. Senior drivers, especially those who aren’t doing a lot of driving, will see a benefit from buying a cheaper car that doesn’t require as expensive car insurance. That means avoiding flashy sports cars, SUVs and other larger cars for more modest sedans, mini vans and used cars. Mostly, the insurance company will want to see you purchasing a car that has a high safety rating and that is equipped with multiple safety features. Save even more by purchasing a used car that falls into the safe category.
  4. Purchase the policy in full ahead of time. Seniors can save up to 10% of their insurance costs by paying the entirety of their policy in one fell swoop ahead of time when it first kicks off. This eliminates the costs of monthly interest fees and other administration fees.
  5. Get quotes from the internet. In this way, senior drivers can shop around and get quotes from multiple auto insurance companies to see what their rates might be. From there, they’re able to choose the cheapest they want, depending on what is most applicable to them. It will also provide some context over whether the current insurance company they’re using has the best rates for them or not, so they can opt to leave it if they want instead.
